As a freshman, Earnest played in five games with one forced fumble and 16 tackles. In his second season, he led South Carolina with 97 tackles and became a starter. Due to an appendectomy, Earnest missed most of South Carolina's prep practice heading into his junior season. As a junior, Ernest again led the team with 86 tackles, five for a loss. Earnest revealed at the end of the season that he would forgo his season and enter the NFL draft.
In the 2021 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected Earnest in the third round with the 103rd overall pick. On July 22, 2021, Earnest signed his four-year contract with the Rams. In 2021 Earnest entered his recruiting season as the backup inside linebacker behind Troy Reeder and Kenny Young.
After the Rams traded Young before Week 8, Ernest was thrust into the starting lineup. In Week 16 Earnest suffered a high ankle sprain and was placed on injured reserve on December 28, finishing the regular season with one sack and 61 tackles, with two interceptions and four passes defensed in 15 games and seven starts.
