At first, Obinna was a basketball player, he didn't start playing football until he got to the US. Obinna garnered scholarship offers from several SEC schools as he was a highly-rated OT recruit and ultimately committed to Memphis before his senior year of high school.
On May 13, 2022, Obinna signed his signature prior to Detroit Lions training camp after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft. Obinna's pursuit of making the 53-man roster, along with other players, was featured on his television show HBO Hard Knocks. Obinna appeared in 23 snaps against the Steelers, 31 snaps against the Falcons and 22 snaps against the Colts during the 2022 preseason.
On August 30, Obinna was waived as part of the final roster cuts, though he was signed to the practice squad the following day. On January 9, 2023, Obinna was signed to a reserve/future contract and on August 27, 2023, he resigned.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Obinna to their practice squad on October 3, 2023, and on October 24, he was released. The Michigan Panthers of the United States Football League (USFL) signed Obinna on December 8, 2023. On December 12, Obinna was released to sign with an NFL team.
