Brown made his television debut on KIEM-TV in Eureka, California in 1984 as a reporter. He went on to report and anchor on KOLO-TV in Reno, Nevada, KNTV in San Jose, California, and KFMB-TV in San Diego, California. He then returned to Los Angeles to work for KABC-TV in 1989 as a journalist.
Later on KABC-TV, Brown was named a weekend anchor and until 1996, he was given the task of anchoring on the daily show at 6 p.m. The following year his mooring duties were extended to include the TV channel at 4 p.m.
Brown became the second African-American to become the main anchor of a television station at 11 p.m. per week in Los Angeles. Together with co-anchor Michelle Tuzee was transferred to the newscast at 17:00 in August 2007, except for the anchoring of the program at 11 p.m.
