Biography of Sam Nichols
Sam Nichols is an American journalist who currently serves as chief meteorologist at KTAB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Abilene, Texas, where he has been a weather forecaster for twenty years.
Nichols has been voted “Favorite TV Weather Person” in the Abilene Reporter-News Reader’s Choice Awards multiple times. In addition, he has been awarded the “Bell” Award for outstanding media coverage of issues in education by the Texas Association of Retired Teachers.
Sam retired from coaching women’s basketball after 33 years in 2007. He was the head women’s basketball coach at McMurry University for the past 12 years. He retired as the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach in McMurry University history. Sam was later named to the McMurry University Athletic Hall of Honor in 2017.
He is the founder and president of Basketball Smiles, a 20-year-old initiative that provides free basketball camps in the inner cities of the Bahamas. Sam was nominated as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2013 “in recognition of tangible and significant support offered to the promotion of better understanding and friendlier relations between the peoples of the world”.
In 2018, Sam competed on Dancing With the Abilene Stars and won Best Costume. He also appeared in the Abilene Opera Association’s 2019 performance of West Side Story.
Sam received the Kiwanis Community Caring Award from the Kiwanis Club of Greater Abilene in August 2019 for his efforts with Basketball Smiles. In addition, he was named the 2019 Abilene Cultural Affairs Council Hearts for the Arts Volunteer Honoree of the Year by the Abilene Opera Association in October.
Sam and his wife Sandy are both members of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee and are involved in various local philanthropic initiatives.
