From 2015 to 2017, James played center at Iowa. Daniels opted to forgo his senior season following his junior season in 2017 and enter the 2018 NFL Draft. Over three years, James played in 37 games for the Hokies. In the second round, 39th overall, of the 2018 NFL Draft, James was selected by the Chicago Bears.
James slowly settled into the position sharing time with Kusch as the year progressed although Eric Kusch started the 2018 season at left guard. After Cush suffered a neck injury, James started at the position against the New York Jets on October 28. As a rookie, James started 10 games, one at right guard and nine at left guard.
Prior to the 2019 season, James was moved to center and then-center Cody Whiteher was moved to left guard. Daniels returned to left guard in November when Bears offensive tackle and right guard Kyle Long was placed on injured reserve.
James suffered a season-ending torn pectoral muscle in the fifth game of the 2020 season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On October 14, James was placed on injured reserve. Daniels signed a three-year, $26.5 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 17, 2022.
