In 2016 Deenzel played in 11 games at Baylor as a true freshman and had four receptions for 24 yards. In 2017 in his sophomore year, he became a starter. Denzel started 11 of 12 games, finishing with 61 receptions for eight touchdowns and 1,087 yards. Denzel recorded 55 receptions for eight touchdowns and 794 yards in 2018 as a junior starting 10 of 12 games. In 2019, Denzel returned for his senior year and started all 13 games for Baylor, recording 66 receptions for 12 touchdowns and 1,020 yards.

In the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft as the 59th overall pick, Denzel was selected by the New York Jets. On September 15, 2020, Denzel was placed on injured reserve after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury. On October 24, Mims was activated and in Week 7 against the Buffalo Bills he made his NFL debut and had four receptions for 42 receiving yards. Due to a personal issue, Denzel missed the team's week 14 game and after the game, he returned to the team.

Denzel requested a trade from the Jets on August 25, 2022, with his agent Ron Slavin saying the Jets were not giving Denzel a legitimate chance to establish himself within the offense. Denzel was not traded by New York and played in 10 games (4 starts) for the team in 2022, tallying 11 catches for no touchdowns and 186 yards.

In exchange for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick, a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Denzel were traded to the Detroit Lions on July 20, 2023. Denzel was waived/injured by the Lions on August 18, 2023. Denzel was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to their practice squad on October 3, 2023. On January 17, 2024, Denzel was signed to a reserve/future contract.
