Karl had four sacks and 20 tackles in 2013 as a true freshman at Auburn. Due to a torn ACL, Carl missed his sophomore year in 2014. Due to injuries, Carl played in just seven games in his junior season in 2015, recording one fumble and 17 tackles.
In the 2017 NFL Draft, Carl was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round, 116th overall. Karl played in all 16 games with one start, recording 8.5 sacks and 16 tackles. Behind Geno Atkins' 9.0, Carl's 8.5 sacks finished second on the team and first among all recruits, earning him a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team.
Karl played in eight games in 2018 before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 8. On November 5, 2018, Karl was placed on injured reserve. The New York Jets signed Carl to a three-year, $45 million contract on March 18, 2021.
