Steve Weagle is a Canadian-American CBM-certified broadcast meteorologist known for his work as chief meteorologist for Florida-based WPTV NewsChannel 5. He joined the station in 1998 after leaving a long career as chief weather forecaster for CTV News in Ottawa, Canada. As such, Steve has worked at WPTV for nearly 24 years. His most memorable and famous news stories include coverage of the 2003 tornado that made its way through South Florida, Hurricane Frances of 2004, and delivering the latest weather reports every weekday and weekend evening.

Weagle is a Canadian native who was born and raised in the small town of Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada. He moved to the United States as an adult in 1998 and settled permanently. Growing up, Steve was described as a very intelligent child who was always curious about the weather and climate change happening around him. His favorite subject during middle school and high school was math and science. His passion for these subjects led Steve to consider becoming an astronomer, but instead he became fascinated with weather and pursued it in college. Steve was able to graduate with a UNB Science degree in Mathematics and Physics and received his BS in meteorology from Dalhousie University. He then received the high-level CBM seal certificate from the American Meteorological Society for his incredible work.

Wegle began his career working as an intern for the Weather Service. He delivered various updates and tracked different hurricanes in Canada and North America for almost two years. From there, he joined CTV News and began to build a reputation for himself as a very capable broadcast metrologist. He covered various winter storms that crossed Canada and its environs in the early 1990s and different tornadoes that tore through Ottawa and other cities. His reporting earned him a CBM Seal which is considered the highest seal certificate awarded to the best television meteorologist. In 1998, Steve left Canada and moved to Florida to work as a weekend weather anchor.

Ultimately, Steve’s high qualifications and hard work earned him his current position as WPTV’s Chief Meteorologist. He became famous for his epic news coverage of Hurricane Frances in 2004 and reporting on the tornado that tore through South Florida and its neighboring states. As of 2023, Steve is still in his role as Chief Metrologist for WPTV NewsChannel 6. In his spare time, Weagle hosts his own self-titled Ride For the Red Cross event to meet and help all people in Florida community
