Howie was selected in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He played defensive end for the team for 13 seasons. He was named to eight Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Additionally, he was named to the 10th Anniversary All-Madden team in 1994. He was named NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year in 1985, as well as NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year.
In 1986, he was named to his fourth straight Pro Bowl and helped the Raiders record 63 sacks. Additionally, as a left defensive end for the Raiders during the 1983 season, he won Super Bowl XVIII. He retired in 1993 as the team’s last player to be a Raider before the franchise moved to Los Angeles.
After his retirement, he appeared as the lead in action films such as Firestorm in 1998 and Broken Arrow. He was also seen in 3000 Miles to Graceland and That Thing You Do!
