O'Connell attended Glacier High School and played baseball, football and basketball: for three years O'Connell was the captain of the baseball team, and also in his senior year he was the captain of the basketball and football teams. In 2017 Patrick appeared in 10 games for the Marauders football team, recording 3.5 tackles and 33 tackles for loss while also having a defensive touchdown. Patrick left Mary and gave up his baseball career and athletic scholarship in 2018 to join the Montana Grizzlies football team as a walk-on. Patrick was named the Scout Defensive Player of the Year and redshirted his first season at Montana. Patrick became a starter for Montana at linebacker, moving up the depth chart midway through the 2019 season. In 14 games, Patrick had eight starts for the 2019 Montana Grizzlies and had 7.5 tackles for loss, 56 tackles and a team-leading 6.5 sacks.
