Biography of Omar Sachedina
Omar Sachedina is a Canadian broadcast journalist currently serving as Chief News Anchor from September 2022. He won his position in 2022 after replacing Lisa LaFemalle whose contract was terminated by CTV National News. Omar previously worked as Chief National Affairs Correspondent for CTV News before replacing Lisa. He also worked with City News and CP 24 in 2008 before joining CTV News. In 2006, Omar also worked as a news reporter for CBS Radio, The Globe & Mail and the Toronto Star.
Sachedina is a British Columbian who grew up in a Muslim middle class. His parents immigrated as Indians originally from Uganda and settled in British Columbia, Canada. Omar developed an interest in journalism and news at the age of twelve. Therefore, he began submitting letters to the editors of various publications when he turned thirteen.
Omar completed high school through an International Baccalaureate Program at Port Moody Secondary School in his native British Columbia. Omar then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Philosophy from McGill University based in Montreal. He then received a Master of Science in journalism from New York-based Columbia University.
Omar started his career as a journalist while he was a student. In 2005, he traveled to Uganda in East Africa to discover his East African heritage. He also produced a PBS Frontline Fellowship feature document called Uganda while there. After graduating from college, Sachedina worked for PBS and then the Vancouver Sun.
He then appeared as an editor and reporter for the Toronto Star, CBS Radio and The Globe & Mail. Eventually, Omar joined CP24 and CTV National News in 2009. His primary duty at CTV was to cover breaking news based in Toronto, Canada. In 2013, Omar moved to Ottawa and worked as a Parliamentary Correspondent there until he was promoted in 2022.
