Stephen Gan is an award-winning journalist from the Philippines who currently works as the editor-in-chief of V Magazine and VMAN. He is also the creative director of Ell US. Prior to his current role, he worked as creative director of US Harper’s Bazaar and co-founded Visionaire. He has received many Awards throughout his career.
He was awarded the Creative Visionary Award by the CFDA in 2001 following his Harper’s Bazaar appointment. Talking about his education, he pursued a photography degree at Parsons New School of Design. He is Filipino, but moved to New York in the early 80s.
He co-founded Visionaire in 1991 with model Cecilia Dean and Parsons graduate James Kaliardos. The magazine gave free rein to artists. For this, he ended up becoming famous for projecting innovative and groundbreaking images. Now a coveted fashion publication, Visionaire publishes three issues a year with past contributions from fashion heavyweights.
He started V magazine in 1999. Gan launched it as a more accessible publication with pop-culture editorials and ready-made designs. VMAN joined later in 2003. In 2014, he left Visionaire but continues to run V magazine and VMAN.
