Roger Johnson is an English television journalist, news reader and presenter who currently works as the lead presenter for BBC North West Tonight. He is also a regular presenter on BBC Breakfast and other national BBC News platforms.
Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, he attended Newcastle-under-Lyme School. He later graduated from the University of Birmingham and the University of California at Berkeley. After graduating, he joined the BBC as a reporter for BBC Radio Solent and BBC Radio Manchester. Most notably, his first television role was as a sports journalist on BBC South’s South Today news program.
During this time, Johnson was also the relief presenter for Sally Taylor and worked for many other BBC television channels. In addition, he was named Regional Television Society Regional Sports Presenter of the Year in 2002. However, he left BBC South in September 2011 after 14 years to replace Gordon Burns as lead presenter at North West Tonight.
In April 2014, he covered the 25th Anniversary Service for the Hillsborough Disaster. The program was named Best Regional News Program in Roya. North West Television Awards. Together with the BBC team, they won the award again in 2015 for their participation in the collection.
The program also won the award in 2017 for a cover collection for the Manchester Arena bombing. Johnson was also nominated for National & Regional Presenter of the Year at the Royal Television Society.
