Conn’s first radio show was Saturday night at WDUB in Granville, Ohio. He chose to use the on-air nickname, Robert Thomas, believing that his real name was not appropriate for the radio company early in his career. Returning to Chicago after graduating from college, he worked in WLUW, beginning in August 1986. At the time, Conn was the producer of Don Vogel on WMAQ (AM) and Walter Jacobson on WBBM-TV. He made his radio debut on Sunday morning on WLS (AM) on August 27, 1989. Conn claims that his performance went badly, but that the show’s director ordered the show to continue after confusing him with another host.
