Rick Stein Biography
Christopher Richard Stein is an English celebrity chef, restaurateur, author and television presenter. He is the head chef and co-owner of “Rick Stein at Bannisters” in Mollymook and Port Stephens in Australia; Stein has also written cookbooks and hosted television programs.
Richard was born in Churchill, Oxfordshire. He was educated at Well Court outside Tewkesbury. He then transferred to Wells House, the Court’s older sister school, and finally to Uppingham School. Following this, he completed a hotel management internship at the Great Western Royal Hotel in Paddington. Shortly thereafter he worked there for six months before moving to Australia.
While there in Australia, he worked as a laborer in an abattoir as well as a clerk in a shipyard. He then decided to continue his education and was accepted into New College, Oxford, where he graduated with a degree in English. Shortly after graduating from college, he and his friend Johnny opened a nightclub in Padstow where Vesta served meals. However, they regularly clashed with the police which led to the closure of the shop.
Stein and his wife Jill then turned the place into a small harborside bistro called ‘The Seafood Restaurant’. He has run the Seafood Restaurant for over 25 years, seeing it grow from a seaside bistro to an award-winning restaurant with an international reputation. In addition to this, Rick made his first television appearance as a guest chef on Keith Floyd’s show Floyd on Fish in 1985. After that, he appeared again on Floyd’s documentary television series Floyd on Food. He then appeared on several award-winning television shows, including Fruits of the Sea, Rick Stein’s Seafood Lover’s Guide, and Rick Stein’s Food Heroes among others.
In addition, Rick has received numerous awards and honours, including the Glenfiddich Trophy for his outstanding contribution to widening the understanding and appreciation of fine food and drink in Britain. He has also won the AA Guide Chefs’ Chef of the Year award for 1999-2000. In 2003, Stein was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors list for services to tourism in Cornwall. He opened his second restaurant at Bannisters in Salamander Bay, Port Stephens.
In addition, Stein has also authored a number of cookbooks. Many of these were companion books for television series. In addition, he has also written his autobiography, Under a Mackerel Sky: A Memoir, which was released in 2013. He has been associated with charities such as South West PESCA, the National Deep Sea Fishermen’s Mission and the National Trust among others. Currently, he is the head chef and co-owner of “Rick Stein at Bannisters” in Mollymook, New South Wales, Australia.

Apart from his first restaurant, Rick has opened more restaurants such as “St Petroc’s Bistro”, “Rick Stein’s Café” and “Stein’s Fish & Chips” restaurant. In Cornwall, he has other restaurants including The Cornish Arms pub, Ricks Stein’s Falmouth restaurant and Rick Stein, Fistral restaurant. Some of the locations where the hotel is located in Winchester, Poole, Marlborough and Barnes.
