Opal Tometi (born August 15, 1984) is an American social activist, journalist, consultant, and community activist. She is a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. She was the founding executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, the first national immigrant rights group in the United States for citizens of African descent (BAJI).
Tometi’s goal with BLM is to draw attention to the social inequalities that black people face. She started out as a community activist in her hometown, campaigning for civil rights.
She spoke about human rights, migrant rights and social justice around the world. She was a case manager for victims of domestic violence.

Opal Tometi Early life and background
Opal Tometi was born in 1984 to Nigerian immigrants. She is the eldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and now resides in Brooklyn, New York.

She graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Masters in Communication and Advocacy from Arizona State University.
