He started his career on a small radio station in his native Texas in 1978 when he was in junior high school. In 1985, Mike moved from radio to television, taking his first job as a weather presenter at KCEN-TV in Waco, Texas. He became chief meteorologist at KXAN-TV, a subsidiary of NBC in Texas in 1990. He has also worked for the weather in Tyler and San Antonio, Texas.
In 1995, it covered snowstorms, earthquakes and even volcanoes. He also helped launch Bay News 9 as the original meteorologist for Your Morning News. His fondest memories of Bay News 9 were when Bay News 9 successfully predicted Hurricane Charley to remain in the Tampa Bay area to the south.
In 2010, he and co-star Brian McClure won an Emmy Florida Suncoast Emmy Award and a Florida Associated Press Award for Best Meteorological Bulletin for Intense Weather. In addition, he was also elected to the AMS Broadcasters Council for a three-year term from 2012.
