Biography Jonathan Karl
Jonathan Carl is an American political journalist who is currently the chief correspondent in Washington for ABC News and the presenter of The Week with George Stefanopoulos. He has covered every major mission in Washington, DC, including the White House, the Capitol, the Pentagon, and the State Department, and has reports from more than 30 countries, covering U.S. politics, foreign policy, and the military.
Carl served as the White House Chief of Staff for ABC News from December 2012 until the end of the Trump administration in January 2021. In addition, he is the author of the 2020 book Front Row in his book 2021 Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump View. In 2021, Mediaite named him one of the top 10 “Most Influential in the News Media”.
After his education, he graduated from Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1990, where he was the editor-in-chief of Vassar Spectator. After graduation, he began his career as a researcher and reporter for The New Republic.

In 1994, he became a reporter for the New York Post and was later hired to cover politics as a Generation X reporter for CNN in 1996. He later became a CNN correspondent in Congress.
Karl joined ABC News in January 2003 as the State Department’s Senior Foreign Affairs Officer. He first interviewed Donald Trump in 1994 for a New York Post article about Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s honeymoon at Trump Tower.
He worked for ABC News covering national political news and later became Senior National Security Correspondent in December 2005. In 2006, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his coverage of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
Karl was appointed White House Chief of Staff for ABC News in December 2012. He continues to be ABC News Washington’s chief correspondent and co-presenter of This Week with George Stefanopoulos. Although he is an ABC correspondent, he has appeared frequently on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News.
