Biography of Jawan Strader
Jawan Strader is an Emmy Award-winning American journalist currently working for NBC 6 as a presenter and presenter. Together with Jackie Nespral they co-present the weekly NBC 6 News nights at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. Strader also hosts Voices with Jawan Strader, a community affairs program focused on the black community and the underprivileged.
Jawan is a well-known news figure in South Florida. Comes to the anchor desk with over 20 years of journalism experience, covering some of the biggest and most important stories in South Florida and across the country.
Jawan is known for getting straight to the heart of breaking news, especially those that have an impact in South Florida. Strader received an Emmy Award in 2018 for his coverage of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the incident at the Hollywood Hills Nursing Home, in which 12 seniors died after Hurricane Irma.
Joan was also the only South Florida performer on stage when a church in Charleston, South Carolina was shot. Strander was in Orlando the day after the terrorist attack at the Pulse nightclub, talking to the victims and sharing their stories with viewers. He was also in Havana, Cuba, to cover the historic visit of former President Barack Obama.
Jawan is from Indianapolis, Indiana, but has lived in South Florida for the past ten years. His profession took him from South Bend, Indiana to Tulsa, Austin, Washington, Cleveland and Miami.
Strader holds a degree in journalism and speech communication from Indiana University. In 2012, he joined WTVJ / NBC 6. Jawan previously worked on local CBS station as a presenter for the weekend, as a presenter at 10 p.m. and as a breakfast presenter, as well as a presenter on a community show.

Jawan is also known in the community for his dedication and hard work. He was awarded a special award for media coverage of public education by the Miami-Dade Education Fund. Joan was named one of South Florida’s most powerful black men by Legacy magazine.
Strader is a mentor to a number of young journalists and a role model for 5000 models of excellence, member of the National Association of Black Journalists, 100 Black Men of South Florida and Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity, Inc.
