JD Greear Biography
James David “JD” Greear is an American religious leader who is currently pastor of The Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina. From 2018 to 2021, he served as the 62nd president of the Southern Baptist Assembly.
Greer became pastor of The Summit Church in 2002 as a member of the International Mission Council team.
JD became the 62nd President of the South Baptists Convention in 2018 and in undisputed elections in 2019, he was re-elected with admiration for a second one-year term. In addition, when the SBC annual conference in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no replacement could be elected, his term was extended for a third year.
Greear tried to serve both the victims and the perpetrators of sexual abuse at the local church where he serves as pastor. Baptist churches, he believes, should focus on the gospel message of Jesus and not on national political goals.
In terms of his education, Greear earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Campbell University after graduation from Word of Life Biblical Institute. In addition, JD enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Southeastern Baptist Theological School in 1999 and received his PhD in philosophy in 2003, focusing on Christian and Islamic theology. “Theosis and Muslim Evangelism: How The Recovery of a Patristic Understanding of Salvation Can Aid Evangelical Missionaries in the Evangelization of Islamic People”, was the title of his dissertation.
