He was a professional football coach before starting his career in broadcasting. Tom has worked with professional football leagues such as AF2, XFL, Arena Football League and NFL Europe in this capacity. Additionally, his first coaching position was as an assistant coach to his father with the Amsterdam Admirals from 1996 to 1997.

He eventually became offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the AFL’s New York CityHawks. Tom, however, earned his first coaching position for AF2’s Tennessee Valley Vipers in 2000 at the age of 25. During his first season with Tennessee Valley, he led the team to the Arena Cup. He He has also worked as an assistant for his father’s league champion Los Angeles Xtreme since the XFL’s inception in 2001.
