Adam H. Spiegel (Spike Jonze), the son of Arthur H. Spiegel III and Sandra L. Granzow, was born in New York. His father was of German and Jewish descent. Jonze is the grandson of Arthur Spiegel and the great-great-grandson of Joseph Spiegel, the founder of the Spiegel catalog.
Jonze grew up in Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1987, he moved to Los Angeles. He became associate editor and then photographer for independent bike magazine Freestylin’ after becoming a BMX enthusiast.
As a teenager, Jonze began photographing BMX riders and skateboarders for Freestylin’ Magazine and Transworld Skateboarding, as well as co-founding the youth culture magazine Dirt. He began filming street skateboarding films, including the influential Video Days, after breaking into film (1991).
Adaptation, Jonze’s second feature film, was directed in 2002 and co-written by Kaufman. The acclaimed dramedy follows Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), a screenwriter who struggles to adapt a book about orchids into a movie.
Jonze rose to prominence after creating and producing the television series Jackass (2000-02) and subsequent films Jackass: The Movie (2002) and Jackass: Number Two (2004). (2006).
He worked as an actor on and off throughout his career, co-starring in David O. Russell’s wartime comedy Three Kings (1999) and appearing in supporting roles in Bennett Miller’s Moneyball (2011) and The Wolf. of Wall Street by Martin Scorsese (2013). ), as well as a recurring role on the comedy series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (2010–2012) and guest appearances in his own films. Jonze co-founded Directors Label and Palm Pictures with filmmakers Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry. He is currently Creative Director of Vice Media, Inc.
