Shigeru Ban is a famous Japanese architect, famous for his innovative paper work, precision recycled cardboard tubes. He has made significant contributions to the field of architecture with his unique approach and sustainable design solutions, especially in disaster relief projects around the world.
However, from a young age, Ban was intrigued by architecture, inspired by the carpenters who worked in his family’s home. He pursued his passion for architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts before moving to the United States. While there he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 1980. He continued his studies at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York, where he studied under John Hejduk and graduated in 1984.
In addition, Ban’s career is characterized by his commitment to humanitarian efforts and sustainability. One of his first major projects to gain international attention was the ‘Paper Log House’ for UNHCR in 1995, designed for refugees from the Rwandan Civil War. This project incorporated his approach to affordable, sustainable and disaster-resilient housing. Since then he has undertaken various disaster relief projects, including temporary housing for earthquake victims in Kobe, Japan (1995), Turkey (1999) and Haiti (2010).
Additionally, in 2014, Ban was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture’s highest honor, for his innovative use of materials and dedication to humanitarian efforts around the world. Additionally, his notable projects include the Center Pompidou-Metz in France, the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, USA.
