Nick Saban’s career
He had no intention of entering the coaching ranks until Don James hired him at Kent State as a graduate assistant while Saban waited for his wife to graduate. Saban later served in NCAA Division IA as an assistant coach at several schools: West Virginia in 1978 and 1979, Ohio State in 1980 and 1981, Navy in 1982, Syracuse in 1977 and Michigan State from 1983 to 1987.
After the 1987 season, Kent State passed on Nick for the head coaching vacancy and hired Dick Crum. He was then hired by the Houston Oilers of the National Football League as an assistant.
Saban began his coaching career when he was hired on December 22, 1989 by the University of Toledo. Coming off 6–5 seasons in both 1988 and 1989, the 1990 Rockets enjoyed quick success under Nick Saban. With a 9–2 season, Toledo was the co-champion of the Mid-American Conference. While coaching at Toledo, he turned down an application from future coach Urban Meyer, who was searching Saban’s staff for any coaching job.

He became Michigan State’s head coach prior to the 1995 season. Michigan State had not had a winning season since 1990, and the team was sanctioned under his predecessor and former mentor, George Perles by the NCAA for recruiting violations committed.
Starting in 1995, Nick modestly improved Michigan State’s fortunes, leading the Spartans to bowl games in each of his first three seasons. Michigan State finished 6–5–1, 6–6, and 7–5 from 1995 to 1997. By comparison, in 1992–1994, MSU had finished 5–6, 6–6, and 5–6 (before losing the NCAA).
On November 7, 1998, at Ohio Stadium the Spartans upset the #1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes 28–24.
