He was born in the Bronx, New York to Jewish parents, but grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He also grew up in an intelligent household, with his father being a pilot. Larry was diagnosed with pneumonia at nine months old and couldn’t cope while he was sick. As a result, Ellison’s birth parents gave him up for adoption to relatives.

Ellison was able to launch his first company, Oracle, as a white paper product in 1977.
