Joe Torres Biography

Joe Torres is an American award-winning journalist and author currently working as a news anchor and reporter at WABC-TV in New York. Torres occasionally fills in for anchors on the weekly newscast for the station’s eyewitnesses (usually Bill Ritter). Prior to that, she co-anchored the station’s Saturday and Sunday evening newscasts with Sandra Bookman.

He also hosts Tiempo, a long-running panic-focused current affairs show on WABC that airs Sunday mornings. Torres hails from Brooklyn, New York and is of Puerto Rican descent. He joined the Eyewitness News team in 1996 as a general assignment reporter.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joe attended PS 198 until the sixth grade when his family moved to North Westchester County. He is a proud graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River.

Joe is also a proud graduate of SUNY Brockport where he earned his BA in Communications. In college, he played intercollegiate football in New York. Torres is an active member of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams.

He began his television career in 1987 as NBC’s Page in New York. However, Joe’s first reporting job was at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia where he worked as a general assignment reporter and earned reporter covering county government. After some time, Torres moved to ABC affiliate WNEP-TV in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to work as Consumer Reporter, General Reporter and Weekend Anchor.

In 1992, Joe took a job as a Jersey Shore correspondent for Disney/ABC-owned WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.

Some of Joe’s most memorable reporting includes extensive coverage of Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. Before John Paul II’s death, Joe followed the globe-trotting pontiff on his trips to Cuba, Mexico and the Holy Land, providing New Yorkers with local perspectives on world events. In addition, he was at the Vatican for the Pope’s silver anniversary and for his death, when millions flocked to Rome to bid farewell to the spiritual leader.

In April 2005, Joe was in St. Peter’s Square when the white smoke from the Sistine Chapel informed the world of the election of Pope Benedict XVI. Three years later, Torres provided in-depth coverage of Pope Benedict’s visit to New York. He returned to the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square in March 2013 for the historic election of Pope Francis, the church’s first pontiff from Latin America.

For two days a week, Joe comes off the street and heads to the anchor’s office. Every Saturday and Sunday night, Joe serves as Co-Anchor of the 5, 6 and 11:00 editions of Eyewitness News This Weekend.

Torres also serves as the host of “Tiempo,” a 30-minute public affairs program targeting the ever-growing Latino population in the New York metropolitan area. “Tiempo” airs every Sunday morning at 11:30.

His distinctive narrative earned him a Peabody Award and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting on the world-changing events of 9/11. In addition, Joe won an Emmy Award for his coverage of the 2001 Greenpoint Gas Tank Implosions.
