“Some of the shine has dissipated”
Who can forget Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar speech when she won Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love? The tears, the dress, the very long list of loved ones. It was award speech gold. Yes, Gwyneth was once one of the most famous actors on the Hollywood circuit but, all of a sudden, she’s largely disappeared from the big screen.
The Goop founder has now opened up about why she hasn’t starred in many movies since her 2005 film Proof, telling SiriusXM’s Bruce Bozzi on “Quarantined with Bruce” that she fell in love with acting.
“I think when you hit the bullseye, when you’re 26 and you’re a metrics-driven person who, frankly, doesn’t like to play that much at the end of the day,” Gwyneth explained. “I kind of felt like, well, now who am I supposed to be? Like, what am I, where am I headed?”
She continued, “Some of the shine of acting has worn off, you know, being under such intense public scrutiny, being a kid going through every breakup with every title, like being criticized for everything that you do and say and carry. And it’s so transient, you’re always everywhere. It’s hard to put down roots.
The mother-of-two said she loved being at home with her family, so traveling around the world and spending weeks there was the opposite of what she wanted.
“Like I’m a homebody, you know, me, I like hanging out with my old friends and cooking and hugging my kids. Like I don’t want to be alone in a hotel room in Budapest for six weeks,” he said. she declared. said. “Like, that’s just not who I am.”
Without referring to former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein by name, she continued, “So if you compound these things with the fact that, to be totally frank, I had a really tough boss for most of my film career at Miramax… Like, so you take all these things, you’re like, ‘I don’t know if this is really my calling.'”
Of course, she doesn’t stop acting altogether, and fans can still see her in The Politician and Iron Man movies — or, alternatively, you can buy a Goop Candle that smells like her vagina and orgasm.
