Career Dame Sandra Mason
On October 20, 2021, Sandra was elected by the Parliament of Barbados to become the country’s first president and took office on November 30, 2021, when Barbados ceased to be a constitutional monarchy and became a republic.
She was a practicing lawyer who has served as a judge of the High Court in Saint Lucia and as a judge of the Court of Appeal in Barbados and was the first woman admitted to the bar in Barbados.
She served as chair of the CARICOM Commission for the Assessment of Regional Integration, was the first judge to be appointed as an ambassador from Barbados, and was the first woman to serve on the country’s Supreme Court.
Mason was the first Barbadian appointee to the Commonwealth Secretariat Court of Arbitration. In 2017, she was appointed the 8th Governor General of Barbados, with a term beginning on January 8, 2018.
Concurrent with her appointment, Mason was awarded the Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. On assuming the office of Governor General, he became Chancellor of the Order of National Heroes, the Order of Barbados and the Order of Liberty.
