Charles Hurt is an American journalist and political commentator who is currently the opinion editor of The Washington Times, the editor of Fox News, a contributor to Breitbart News, and the editor of the Drudge Report. Hurt’s views have been seen as leaning heavily toward the Republicans.
Charles began his newspaper career in Chatham, Virginia. At the time, he was eight years old and the managing editor of a local single publication he ran with his brother and sister called The Gilmer News and Gossip. Despite his father’s warning that the writing field doesn’t pay, Hurt has nothing else he wanted to do.
Charlie’s first paid job was at the Danville Register & Bee in the summer of 1993. He covered everything from summer storms to fall tobacco auctions. This job gave him the opportunity to learn some of the deeper lessons and ground rules of the paper from Bonnie Cooper, who was the very fine editor of the paperback then, and Bernard Baker and Robert Benson, who are still there today .
Driven by a zeal to learn, Charlie worked the following summer in the state office at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College with degrees in English and Political Science in 1995, Hurt headed west and took an internship in St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Dreaming of working for a big city newspaper covering crime, politics and mayhem, Charlie moved north to the Motor City and crossed the picket line. While there, he worked for the Detroit News from 1995 to 2001, covering gang murders, the mob, corruption in the city’s public schools and politics that make congressional shenanigans look tame.
Charlie worked at the newspaper until 2001, when he moved to the Washington, DC area to join the staff of The Charlotte Observer. In addition, Hurt was the New York Post’s DC bureau chief and news columnist covering the White House for five years.
Between 2003 and 2007, Hurt covered the US Congress as a reporter for The Washington Times before leaving to join the New York Post. In 2011, Charlie joined The Washington Times as a political columnist and was named opinion editor in December 2016.
