Shiv Nadar is a prominent Indian industrialist and entrepreneur, known for founding HCL Technologies Limited, a global IT services company. He turned the IT hardware company into an IT business later.
Nadar started his career at Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to venture out on his own. In the mid-1970s, along with a group of partners, he started the company that would eventually become HCL in a small top-floor room in Delhi, initially focusing on manufacturing calculators and microprocessors.
Later in 1976, Nadar founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) with a vision to create a global technology company. Initially, HCL focused on the hardware sector, producing the country’s first indigenous PCs and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the tech space in India.
By the 1980s, HCL had begun to expand beyond the Indian market, venturing into Singapore and eventually establishing a presence in other countries. The 1990s saw a major change with the creation of HCL Technologies, focused on IT and software services, which would grow to become one of the largest IT services companies in the world. However, later in July 2020, he handed over to his daughter Roshni Nadar. She became the first woman chairman of a listed Indian IT company.
