Biography of Muhoozi Kainerugaba
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a Ugandan Major General who serves as the commander of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF). He was previously commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC). However, both the UPDF and the SFC are accused of using excessive force and kidnappings. Following this, Muhoozi and other senior officials are referred to an International Criminal Court complaint.
In 2017, he was appointed Presidential Advisor, leading to speculation that he is preparing for the presidency. He was later reappointed as Commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) in December 2020. Muhoozi served in the same position from 2008 to 2017.
As a child, he attended schools in Tanzania, Mount Kenya Academy in Nyeri Kenya and Sweden. After his father became President of Uganda, he attended Kampala Parents School, King’s College Budo, and St. Mary’s College Kisubi and graduated in 1994. He was admitted to the Egyptian Military Academy where he attended company and battalion commander courses.
Kainerugaba also attended the Kalama Armored Training School. In 2017, he was accepted into a one-year program at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, graduating in June 2008. He then completed the Executive National Security Program at the South African Defense College.
In 1999, he joined the UPDF with the rank of commissioned officer and graduated in 2000 from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the British Army’s officer training school. Later in 2011 he was promoted to Colonel. Muhoozi then enrolled at the National Defense College of South Africa for the Executive National Program in 2012.
In August of the same year he was promoted to Brigadier General. In addition, he was appointed Commander of the Special Forces Command. He was one of the senior UPDF commanders deployed to South Sudan to support the South Sudan government after fighting broke out in Juba in 2013 and 2014.
Muhoozi was then appointed Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Duties, in 2017. He held this position until December 2020. In 2019, his father, President Museveni, promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant General, the second highest rank in the UPDF. In June 2021 he was appointed Commander of the UPDF ground forces.

A $17 million tender contract for the delivery of medical oxygen was awarded to Kainerugaba’s wife Charlotte’s company Silverbacks, leading to allegations of corruption. During the June 2021 Covid-19 outbreak, oxygen production was shown to malfunction causing the death of many COVID patients.
As of March 2022, he is still an active officer in the UPDF and some people have criticized his latest active involvement in politics. Kainerugaba played an active role in mending the Rwanda-Uganda relationship culminating in the successful opening of Uganda’s border with Rwanda. However, active military personnel are not allowed to participate in active political roles in Uganda. This is as per UPDF rules.
Via Twitter on 8 March 2022, he announced that he would be retiring from the UPDF, although no timetable was given for the retirement.
