Early Life & Education

Zazie Olivia Beetz was born on June 1, 1991, in Berlin, Germany. Her father, Thomas Beetz, is a German cabinet maker who moved to the United States in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall; her mother is an African-American social worker from New York. Her parents separated when she was very young, and she was raised in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood.

She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, the public arts school that has produced more working actors than most drama conservatories. She then studied French at Skidmore College, graduating in 2013, and later trained at the William Esper Studio. Her bilingual upbringing — German at home with her father, English everywhere else — is the reason she still does interviews in both languages.

Career Journey

Atlanta and the Van Breakthrough

Beetz’s first screen credits were small: short films, an episode of Louie, and a recurring part on Netflix’s Easy. The shift came in 2016 when Donald Glover cast her as Van, the on-again partner of Earn (Brian Tyree Henry’s cousin, played by Glover), in FX’s Atlanta. Van was written as an anchor rather than a love interest, and Beetz played her with a coiled, watchful energy that made her the show’s most human presence.

The performance earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018 — the first of several awards-season recognitions for the series.

Deadpool 2, Joker and Blockbusters

In 2018 she played Domino in Deadpool 2, a role that required physical comedy and deadpan timing and won her a Teen Choice nomination. A year later she appeared in Todd Phillips’s Joker as Sophie Dumond, the neighbor whose storyline becomes one of the film’s cruelest turns; she returned for Joker: Folie à Deux in 2024.

Between those franchises she built an enviable art-house résumé: Nine Days (2020), The Harder They Fall (2021), Bullet Train (2022) and voice work as Diane Foxington in The Bad Guys (2022) and The Bad Guys 2 (2025). Since 2021 she has voiced Amber Bennett in Amazon’s animated Invincible.

2026: Nocturne and Discretion

Two streaming projects put Beetz at the center of 2026. Apple TV+ released the trailer for Nocturne on September 29, 2026, a thriller in which she and Liev Schreiber hunt a serial killer; critics immediately framed it as her first true lead in a prestige series. Five days earlier, Deadline reported she had joined the Paramount+ series Discretion alongside Ben Foster, Stella Baker and John Hoogenakker.

She also appeared in They Will Kill You, a horror-action film she discussed with RIOTUS in March 2026 as a study in “female rage” and practical stunt work, and lent her name to Slice, the Chance the Rapper pizza-murder comedy whose trailer dropped on October 13, 2026.

Dating History and Affairs

Beetz has been with David Rysdahl since 2014, a relationship that predates her fame by two years — something she has said kept her grounded when Atlanta broke. They were reported engaged in May 2022 and married in 2023. There is no documented history of affairs or public relationship drama; the only recurring tabloid joke is that Rysdahl is so low-key that fans forget he exists.

Controversies

Beetz has largely avoided scandal. Her most-discussed moment came in 2024 when she addressed the online reaction to Joker: Folie à Deux with measured comments rather than defensiveness. She has also spoken about being racialized differently in Germany and the United States — a conversation she started rather than one she was forced into. No lawsuits, no feuds, no verified misconduct claims.

Conclusion

Zazie Beetz built her career the slow way: a supporting role that refused to be small, then a franchise cameo that became a calling card, then a decade of choices that never repeated themselves. In 2026 she is finally the lead — twice over — and the timing looks deliberate rather than lucky.
