Early Life & Education

Adam Cole was born as Austin Jenkins on July 5, 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. He grew up in the small town of Manheim Township with his parents and younger brother. His mother, Jean Jenkins, has appeared in interviews supporting his career, while his father largely stayed out of the public eye after his parents separated when he was young.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, Austin was a shy but athletic kid who fell in love with professional wrestling at age 9. His hero was Shawn Michaels, and he would copy the Heartbreak Kid’s moves in his backyard with friends. He often tells the story of watching WrestleMania XIV and deciding that day he wanted to become a wrestler.

He attended Manheim Township High School, where he played soccer and worked part-time jobs to pay for wrestling training. Unlike many wrestlers who played college football, Cole skipped college to chase his dream. At 18, he enrolled in the Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) Academy in Philadelphia, training under DJ Hyde and Jon Dahmer. His small size at the time, around 160 pounds, made trainers doubt him, but his work ethic and charisma set him apart.

During his early training, he adopted the ring name Adam Cole. The name had no deep meaning at first, but he later built the Panama City Playboy persona around it. By 2008, just after turning 19, he was wrestling in fire halls and high school gyms across the East Coast for $25 a night.

Career Journey

The Adam Cole career story is a classic rise from independent gyms to sold-out arenas. Over 17 years, he has headlined for Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, WWE NXT, and AEW.

Independent Beginnings (2008-2010)

Cole made his pro debut on June 21, 2008, for the Eastern Wrestling Alliance. He quickly formed a tag team called the Future Shock with Tyler Veritas and won his first titles in Maryland Championship Wrestling and the Mid-Atlantic territory. His early style mixed high-flying moves with strong technical wrestling, which caught the eye of CZW bookers.

In 2009, he won CZW’s Best of the Best X tournament, a major breakout for young talent. That same year, Ring of Honor (ROH) signed him to a developmental deal. He balanced ROH dark matches with CZW World Junior Heavyweight Championship runs, building a reputation as the hardest-working young heel on the indies.

Ring of Honor Breakthrough (2010-2017)

Adam Cole’s ROH career made him a star. After teaming with Kyle O’Reilly as Future Shock, the duo won the ROH World Tag Team Championship in 2012. When they split in 2013, Cole turned heel and won the ROH World Television Championship, then the ROH World Championship by defeating Mark Briscoe at Death Before Dishonor XI.

At just 24, he became the youngest ROH World Champion at that time. He later joined Bullet Club in 2016 and became the first-ever three-time ROH World Champion in 2017, feuding with Jay Lethal, Christopher Daniels, and Dalton Castle. His ROH record, combined with PWG World Championship and CZW titles, made him the most wanted free agent outside WWE.

PWG, NJPW and International Fame (2012-2017)

Parallel to ROH, Cole dominated Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in California. He won the 2012 Battle of Los Angeles tournament and held the PWG World Championship for a record 538 days. In New Japan Pro-Wrestling as part of Bullet Club, he teamed with The Young Bucks as Superkliq and challenged for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles. These years shaped his Panama City Playboy arrogant heel character and his famous Boom knee strike finisher.

WWE NXT Era and The Undisputed Era (2017-2021)

In August 2017, Adam Cole debuted in WWE NXT at TakeOver: Brooklyn III alongside Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly as The Undisputed Era. The faction later added Roderick Strong and dominated NXT for three years. Cole became the first-ever NXT North American Champion in 2018 in a ladder match at TakeOver: New Orleans, and also won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic with O’Reilly.

His peak came on June 1, 2019, when he defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT Championship. His 403-day reign is still the longest in NXT history, with classic defenses against Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Finn Balor, and Velveteen Dream. He won PWI Wrestler of the Year buzz, headlined Survivor Series 2019 against Daniel Bryan, and was ranked No. 2 in the PWI 500 in 2020. Many fans consider his NXT run the best in brand history.

After losing to Kyle O’Reilly in an Unsanctioned Match at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver 2021 and a final loss to Samoa Joe, Cole’s WWE contract expired in August 2021. He declined a main-roster offer to stay in NXT and chose to leave.

AEW Debut and Championship Chase (2021-2023)

Adam Cole made a shocking AEW debut at All Out 2021 in Chicago, reuniting with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega as part of The Elite. His catchphrase Adam Cole Bay Bay! instantly became a merchandise hit. He feuded with Christian Cage, Jungle Boy, and Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Championship, headlining Revolution 2022.

In June 2022, he suffered a severe concussion and torn labrum during a match with Jeff Hardy, sidelining him for over a year. He returned in 2023 with an unlikely babyface run alongside MJF as Better Than You Bay Bay, winning the ROH World Tag Team Titles. Their friendship storyline was voted 2023’s best angle, but ended with Cole revealing himself as The Devil and forming the Undisputed Kingdom with Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Wardlow, and Roderick Strong.

Injuries, TNT Title and Recent Activity in 2026

The years 2023 to 2025 tested Cole’s health. After ankle surgery in late 2023 that kept him out of WrestleDream and Full Gear, he returned at WrestleDream 2024 to confront MJF. In early 2025, he rebuilt momentum with Paragon and Kyle O’Reilly, then defeated Daniel Garcia at AEW Dynasty 2025 in Philadelphia to win the TNT Championship, his first singles title in AEW.

His reign was cut short. At All In: Texas in July 2025, Cole was forced to vacate the TNT title due to a health issue and took an extended hiatus, sparking retirement rumors. AEW President Tony Khan publicly supported him and kept him under contract.

As of 2026, Adam Cole is back in action. He made a surprise return at AEW Revolution 2026 in March, confronting the Don Callis Family to a huge ovation, and has since worked a lighter schedule focused on tag matches and mentoring younger talent. In interviews in May and August 2026, Cole said he feels 100 percent healthy, is training full-time in Florida, and hopes to chase the AEW World Championship again before the end of 2026. His recent activity also includes Twitch streaming, podcast appearances, and coaching at AEW training seminars.
