Early Life & Education
Trai Byers was born July 19, 1983 in Kansas City, Kansas, into a military family that moved frequently. That constant moving taught him to adapt quickly and observe people – skills that later helped acting. Family spent key years in Tucker, Georgia, where he attended high school and took performance seriously.
He earned an Associate in Theatre from Andrew College, a B.A. in Communications from University of Kansas, then trained at Juilliard and earned an MFA in Acting from Yale School of Drama. That elite training gave him stage discipline, voice and Shakespeare experience that shows in calm controlled screen work. Early 20s were theatre and small TV roles building resume from ground up.
Career Journey
Theatre to Selma Breakthrough (2009–2014)
After Yale he appeared in Caesar and Otto’s Deadly Xmas (2009), All My Children (2011), guest spots on 90210, The Soul Man and Parenthood. Major breakthrough came in 2014 when Ava DuVernay cast him as James Forman in Oscar-nominated Selma about MLK and 1965 marches. Working next to David Oyelowo and Oprah raised his profile instantly and Fox noticed.
Empire – 102 Episodes as Andre Lyon (2015–2020)
In 2015 he was cast as Andre Lyon in Fox’s Empire – eldest Lyon son, Wharton CFO desperate for father Lucious (Terrence Howard) respect, navigating marriage and bipolar disorder. Over six seasons and 102 episodes (2015–2020) he played manic highs, depressions, faith struggles and grief. Instead of stereotype he played Andre smart, ambitious and sick at once – viewers said they finally saw family mental-health struggles on TV. Chemistry with Taraji Henson, Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett made Lyons feel real.
Post-Empire – The 24th, Broadway and Power (2020–Present)
After Empire he chose meaningful projects. He co-wrote, co-produced and starred as Boston in The 24th (2020) about all-Black 24th Infantry and 1917 Houston Riot. He made Broadway debut in 2022 revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson as Avery. On screen: Renato, TV movies like Wife Stalker, faith features and Power Book II universe work.
