Adam H. Spiegel (Spike Jonze), the son of Arthur H. Spiegel III and Sandra L. Granzow, was born in New York. His father was of German and Jewish descent. Jonze is the grandson of Arthur Spiegel and the great-great-grandson of Joseph Spiegel, the founder of the Spiegel catalog.

Jonze grew up in Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1987, he moved to Los Angeles. He became associate editor and then photographer for independent bike magazine Freestylin’ after becoming a BMX enthusiast.
