Development
In January 2019, it was announced that netflix had given the production a series request for an eight-episode first season with Eric Heiserer as showrunner, creator, lead writer and executive producer. The project is part of the partnership between Netflix and 21 Laps Entertainment with the executive production of Shawn Levy. Shooting
Filming for the first season has begun in locations of Budapest and around Kenzthely (Festetics Palace), Hungary in October 2019 and concluded at the end of February 2020, with post-production following.[ 13][14][15] Additional filming took place in Vancouver. . . . MUSIC
Joseph Trapanese is the composer of the series.[ 17] Heisserer and Bardugo appeared on a panel at New York Comic Con in October 2020,[18] during which they played some of the scores.[ 19] Executive producer Josh Barry reported on December 16, 2020 that the final sound mixing was complete.[ 20]
Trapanese wrote the score in 11 months.[ 21] In an interview for the RewardsDailyhe explains how he put everything in place, between directing an orchestra in Zoom and incorporating solo recordings.[ 22] Russian and Slavic music provided the basis for the score’s inspiration, with Bardugo citing Sergei Prokofiev and folk songs as specific examples.[ 23] In addition, elements from other musical traditions have been used, such as the gamelan.[ 22]

He concluded that “shadow and bone will draw you to the Fold with its engaging duo of leadership and global building”.[ 33] Nicole Clark from IGN wrote that “the first season manages to capture a lot of dark magic…without being afraid to make clever changes to certain characters’ origin stories and even the sequence of events, even if the plots of the two book series don’t not always match easily.”[ 34] Screen Rant’s Molly Freeman hailed it as a “super thrilling and exciting drama fantasy series”.[ 35]
Writing for RogerEbert.com, Roxana Hadadi noted the use of cliches in the found-in-literary-fiction series that focuses on young audiences, adding, “Eric Heisserer’s adaptation transcends that familiarity through the commitment to a pitch-perfect cast, well-stylized fight sequences, and intentional development of the characters makes these relationships seem full of nuance and steeped in history.” She concluded, “In total, shadow and bone maintains a sense of inner place for characters who deal with plot developments as varied as girlie dynamics, geopolitical posturing and body horror, and the well-rounded nature of this first emporada contributes to a promising introduction to the fantastic universe of this franchise.”[ 36]
