The Texas Rangers drafted him in the first round in June 1981. On April 1, 1982, Ron and Walt Terrell were traded to the Mets for Lee Mazzilli. He also played for the team until 1991. Additionally, he was traded to the Montreal Expos for former closer Tim Burke in 1991. On July 31, 1991, he was sent to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for two minor leaguers.
