Mike was selected in the 20th round of the 1995 MLB draft by the New York Yankees. Mike’s major league debut was in 1998 when he appeared in eight games in one season. He received his first career World Series ring when the Yankees defeated the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series, but did not play in the postseason. Additionally, on February 1, 1999, he was traded to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Mark Johnson and Ed Yarnall.
Mike was a member of the team from 1999 to 2005. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer on February 21 and underwent surgery, returning to the lineup on May 29 while awaiting spring training. In 2003, he injured his hand after being hit by a pitch from Montreal Expos pitcher Héctor Almonte. He was also dealt to the Red Sox for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Jess Delgado and Harvey Garcia. He was a member of the team from 2005 to 2010.
During his tenure, he was the 2007 World Series MVP and received the Gold Glove in 2005. Between 2008 and 2009, he suffered from a damaged hip labrum, which required surgery. He missed the majority of the 2008 playoffs due to surgery. The team intended to move him to Texas, but the deal fell through.
