Marisa Tomei, who plays Aunt May in the MCU, has some strong words about her Marvel character.
Whichever version of Spider-Man you prefer, Aunt May is an integral part of Peter Parker’s story.
But the actresses who brought the character to life don’t seem to care about the role.
Marisa Tomei and Sally Field both expressed regret at playing the character – but for different reasons.
Marisa Tomei, who first portrayed Aunt May in Captain America: Civil War, expressed dismay at accepting the role as it might have labeled her a “mother character” on screen.
When asked about playing motherly characters in a recent interview with Collider, Tomei said…
“I really regret that I started down this road, and I really regret that I started doing it. I was, you know, I talked about it. Not that, but I mean just that change. And I really always said to myself, ‘Oh, I could play a lot of things.’ Honestly, that’s probably more exaggerated than other things. But, that’s, yeah, I guess I said it all.
“I think every actor and actress has a lot of dimensions, and if the scope of what’s written and done is narrow, and you want to keep working, you do what you can. I mean, I do. I tried it. Maybe it wasn’t the right road, but you know, I try to make the most of it.
Marisa Tomei isn’t the only actress who regrets being Aunt May.
Sally Field, who played Aunt May in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, said she didn’t really like the movies and didn’t put much effort into her performance.
In an interview with Howard Stern, Field said she made the films as a favor to her friend Laura Ziskin, who was gravely ill at the time.
“My friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film. She was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human. It’s really hard to find a three-dimensional character there. , and you work it as hard as you can, but you can’t put ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag.
While Sally Field’s time as Aunt May ended years ago, Marisa Tomei was last seen as the character in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It’s unclear if she will reprise the role in future Marvel movies.
