Biography of Laura Velasquez
Laura Velasquez is a renowned American broadcaster and award-winning meteorologist for AccuWeather, based in State College, Pennsylvania where she analyzes weather patterns using her graphic media skills. Velasquez works with a dedicated team of over 10 meteorologists and also graphic designers to ensure everything weather related is ready for the early show.
Laura’s passion for weather began when she was 5 years old. Even in Kindergarten, Laura’s first choice of television programming was always weather-related. She was always excited to see the effects that severe weather would cause. Laura attended Jenison High School and later pursued her BA in Meteorology, Mathematics and Geographic Science from Central Michigan University (2004-2008). Later in 2011, Laura joined Mississippi State University and graduated with a Masters in Applied Meteorology in 2015.
Additionally, Velasquez earned the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society along with the National Weather Association’s Broadcast Seal of Approval. He is also a member of both organizations.

After completing her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and Mississippi State University, Velasquez began working at WOOD-TV in August 2007. After spending nearly 7 years at the station, Laura moved to Denver, Colorado and joined KDVR/ KWGN where she served as a meteorologist from July 2014 to August 2015. Laura then joined AccuWeather. While at Michigan, Laura was recognized by the Michigan Broadcasters Association by winning the title of “Best Weathercast”.
Outside of her regular work routine, Laura is an avid runner and endurance athlete. Notably, Velasquez has completed four marathons and will run her fifth in Chicago this October. Cherry Creek Trail, Wash Park and the trails at Red Rocks have already become her favorites. Plus, she’s looking forward to climbing some 14-year-olds in the not-too-distant future and is ready to learn how to ski “the right way” on the slopes of the Rockies.
