John Kirby is a retired rear admiral in the United States who worked as a press secretary for the United States Department of Defense. He also served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. Previously, he worked as a military and diplomatic analyst for CNN. During the Obama administration, John was the spokesman for the United States Department of State.
Kirby began his career in 1986 as a surface warfare officer. Later, he was posted as a public affairs officer. Before John became Commander of US Naval Forces in Europe, he was editor-in-chief of the Navy’s flagship monthly magazine. John later became chief of naval operations and special assistant for public affairs to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In 2013 he was appointed as the Pentagon press secretary and later the position of Rear Admiral. He retired from the military after working as a spokesman for the US State Department. Recently, during the Biden administration, John was appointed Pentagon Press Secretary for the second time.
Kirby attended St. Petersburg Catholic High School and later enrolled in the University of the South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Here, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Later, he graduated with a master’s degree in international relations from Troy University. He graduated with a Master of Arts in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.
Kirby has won some awards as he has been in his profession. He has received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
