Jermaine's college career began at Independence Community College. Jermaine appeared on Last Chance U, the fourth season of the Netflix documentary series, where he played under Jason Brown the head coach while at Independence. Jermaine had three forced fumbles, 58 tackles and eight sacks as a freshman. After the season, Jermaine transferred to the University of Georgia.
As a sophomore, Jermaine played in every game for the Georgia Bulldogs, where he had 2.5 sacks and 20 tackles. Jermaine finished third on the team with 11 quarterback sacks and four sacks 16 total tackles as a senior. Jermaine entered the transfer window towards the end of the season and went to Florida State for his final NCAA season.
Jermaine was named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week. After Jermaine finished the season with 12 sacks and 70 tackles, and led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss, he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-ACC.
In the 2022 NFL Draft, Jermaine was selected by the New York Jets in the first round with the 26th overall pick. Johnson blocked a punt that resulted in a safety against the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. Jermaine recorded 29 total tackles and 2.5 sacks and appeared in 14 games as a rookie.
