Rachel McAdams says her romantic scene with Rachel Weisz had an “energy” she never had with male actors
No offense to Ryan Gosling, but Rachel McAdams’ favorite romantic scene wasn’t in The Notebook.
Instead, the actress recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she had the best faked sex of her life while filming her new movie Disobedience with Rachel Weisz. The duo play lovers forced to hide their relationship from their Orthodox Jewish community in the upcoming film based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman.
“A lot of times you’re trying to decide if it’s free or not,” McAdams, 39, said of filming the movie’s love scene. “But that scene was integral to the plot and moving the story forward. The characters need that version to open up…There was an energy to that scene that I didn’t feel in any other scene in love. [with men] in my career. »
McAdams added that there was a “comradeship” in filming a romantic scene with another actress. “We both felt safe and free… All those things you love about being a woman, you can be [in the scene]so I understand the appeal and appeal of that in a sexual context.
The romantic scene in question “is an extremely important and beautiful scene,” Weisz, 48, added, noting that their director, Sebastián Lelio, “scripted it precisely weeks before we shot it.”
Even the scene’s most memorable moment was choreographed by Lelio. “He specified everything he wanted: the wetness, me spitting in Rachel’s mouth, and [a
focus on] Esti’s orgasm – my character [originally] had an orgasm too, but I was okay as a producer, even though it was a really good orgasm, it wasn’t as good for the story as Esti’s,” Weisz said. “At that moment, Esti’s orgasm is both a sexual release and a metaphorical release to freedom, it’s like she’s free to discover who she really is.”
Weisz also noted the differences between performing a romantic scene with a male actor versus a female actress, saying, “normally, as you do a romantic scene, it’s kind of freestyle. You get into bed and in my case it’s always with men and you see what happens. This may seem a bit meaningless and generalized.
She added: “I think Sebastian would say that’s the center of the movie, the heart of the movie, the deepest part of the movie. It was important to him. We had a whole day to shoot it. It was full of meaning it wasn’t just random all the ideas he came up with you know spit in Esti’s mouth they were ideas he wrote as an author it was his It wasn’t mine or Rachel McAdams’, we just saw the storyboard and we were like, ‘This looks really interesting and beautiful.’”
Regarding the saliva swap, McAdams said with a laugh, “I was thrilled that Sebastián was doing something new. It’s provocative and brings the audience into something intimate… The makeup department tested different flavors of lube the night before to use as a brooch. We opted for the lychee taste!
