Controversies
- Dawson was criticized for his racial comedy, particularly for his use of blackface and racial Niger slig in several old sketches and for his jokes about ghetto jokes at VidCon in 2012. In 2014, YouTuber Franchesca Ramsey criticized Dawson on Tumblr, writing that Shane did his modern minstrel show number AT VIDCON and suffered no repercussions. It would be nice for him to admit why these problems are problematic, apologize to his audience and stop doing so. Dawson later apologized for the jokes in a video, stating that he viewed the controversy as a learning experience.
- Dawson was later criticized for his 2018 documentaries, The Mind of Jake Paul and Jeffree Star's The Secret World, with some claiming that Dawson was too sympathetic to the racist scandals of both subjects. Some Twitter users have used the #ShaneDawsonisOverParty hashtag after the last part of The Mind of Jake Paul.
- In 2018, Dawson is the subject of controversy over the comments he had made on pedophilia during a 2014 episode of his podcast Shane and Friends, in which he published a apology video comparing his comic style to the era of shock jocks. The same comments were also the subject of controversy in March 2019, as well as a controversy about the comments he had made during an episode of 2015 of the same podcast about his sexual activities with his cat.
- Dawson has also been criticized for his content on conspiracy theory, as some believe that his videos on the flat Earth, the hoax of landing on the moon and the conspiracy theories about the 9/11 hoax contribute, among other things, the misinformation problems generated by YouTube.
