Russell spent time learning how to play tight end and outside linebacker in 2017 as a true freshman at Colorado while spending the season on the scout team quickly becoming the second. Brady was named the 2017 Colorado Scouts Offensive Player of the Year and impressed in training camp in 2018. Brady received a scholarship before the regular season, except it took most walks at least three years to earn it, if ever. On the depth chart to open the 2018 season, Russell was placed second and had a total of five receptions for 41 yards on the year.
Brady had 23 catches for 221 yards with two touchdowns in 2019, surpassing any Colorado tight end in the previous three years (18). Brady was named team captain the following year, although in the second game, he suffered an injury that sidelined him for the season. In 2021 Brady had his best season, recording 25 receptions for 307 yards, while being nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, presented to the best player who started his career as an athlete. In 2022 Brady returned for a senior year and posted 20 catches for 153 yards with no scores. Brady finished his senior season with 78 receptions for 799 yards with three touchdowns.
