Reed accepted the offer from Middle Tennessee and in his true season (2017) played in 13 games, nine as a starter. Reed earned all-conference and C-USA All-Freshman honors and ranked fourth on the team with 68 tackles and also had one sack and two interceptions. Reed appeared in 13 games and started 12 in 2018 as a sophomore, making a team-high and career-high 107 tackles along with seven passes defensed and four interceptions.

Nationally, Reed's four interceptions ranked 16th. Against Old Dominion on October 27, he returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown, had 3 for a loss, a sack and 17 tackles, and earned conference Defensive Player of the Week honors and the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week award. Reed was named first team all-conference at the end of the season. Reed played in seven games in 2019 as a junior before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Reed compiled a forced fumble, three passes defensed, 58 tackles (fourth on the team) and two interceptions before the injury as a team leader. Additionally, Blankenship blocked two punts, tied for first in the nation. In the senior year, Reed was named second team all-conference despite missing half the season. Reed started all 13 games in 2021 as a fifth-year senior and was the school's leading tackler with 110 stops. Reed ranked eighth in solo tackles per game with 5.8 and had three fumble recoveries that ranked third in the nation.

Reed was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles after going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. Blankenship was one of three 2022 players not drafted on the Eagles' final roster, along with Josh Jobe and Josh Sills. In week five against the Arizona Cardinals, Reed made his NFL debut, recording two tackles in the 20–17 victory.

After primarily being a special teams player after backing up the injured CJ Gardner-Johnson in Week 12, Blankenship saw his first significant time on defense against the Green Bay Packers. Reed led the team in tackles with six and had his first career interception off Aaron Rodgers in the game. After Gardner-Johnson left in free agency, Reed was named the Eagles' starting free safety heading into the 2023 season.
