Brittney Griner Biography
Brittney Griner is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is currently imprisoned in Russia after cartridges containing less than a gram of hashish oil were found in her luggage. She pleaded guilty to the charges on July 1, 2022, and was sentenced to nine years in prison on August 4, 2022.
Regarding her education, she attended Nimitz High School in Houston. While there he played basketball and many other sports including volleyball. As a freshman in college, she practiced with the boys basketball team and worked with a Nimitz soccer coach to develop her leg strength in preparation for learning to dunk. She even dated Shaquille O’Neal after her duck videos went viral on YouTube.
During her senior year, she led the Nimitz Cougars to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game, where they lost 52-43 to Mansfield Summit High School. He dunked 52 times in 32 games as a senior, setting a single-game record with seven dunks against Aldine High School. Additionally, he recorded 25 blocks in a game against Houston Aliff Hastings on November 11, 2008.
In 2009, she was named the nation’s No. 1 female high school basketball player. After that, she was selected to the Phoenix Mercury All-American basketball team in 2009. Later, she received the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete in 2012. She also signed an endorsement with Nike in 2013.
In 2016, she was on the 2016 United States Women’s Olympic team and led them to victory at the Rio Olympics. She protested the Star Spangled Banner and stated that she would not be on the field while the national anthem was played during the opening ceremony in 2020. In 2021, she was named to the United States women’s national team for the 2020 Olympics.
