He is currently the host and host of the National Public Radio (NPR) news comedy and quiz show Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! At the same time, he hosts Through the Decades, a documentary newsmagazine that airs on the CBS/Weigel Broadcasting digital multicast network Decades syndicated subchannel.

William, a Croatian brigadier general in the United States Marine Corps, and a World War II veteran, was born in 1914 and died in 2001.

In 1966, Bill and his late wife Helen Kurti welcomed a baby girl named Mary Kristen in Chicago. Bill and his daughter are honorary co-chairs of the 2014 Oklahoma Indian Summer Festival. Mary spent her teenage summers on her grandparents’ farm in Kansas. He later settled in San Francisco, where he worked in the construction industry for 20 years.
Mary worked as an expedited building permit clerk while there. She eventually moved to Sedan, Kansas, with her partner, David Parsons, to manage her father’s ranch. Mary and David eventually sold all the ranch’s cattle and horses to buy buffalo.
On their 10,000 acres, the two currently manage a herd of 60 buffalo. Preservation of the native grassland has become a priority. In 1970, he and his late wife Helen Kurti welcomed a son named Scott. Scott, on the other hand, died on July 20, 2009, at the age of 38, at Bill’s Kansas cattle ranch. Scott was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in his mid-teens.

Bill presented The Miracle Planet, a four-part science series on PBS in 1986, and a four-part series for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1987. Bill Kurtis founded his own documentary production company, Kurtis Productions, in 1988. same year, he produced “Return to Chernobyl” for the PBS series Nova.
He has narrated nearly 1,000 documentaries and his Productions has produced nearly 500 documentaries for series such as A&E’s Investigative Reports and Cold Case Files, PBS’s The New Explorers, and the History Channel’s Investigating History. He also hosted Towers Productions’ American Justice.
In 1994, he obtained a videotape of Richard Speck, who was convicted of murdering eight student nurses in Chicago in 1966. The video showed Richard having prison sex and using drugs inside the Statesville Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois. The reporter produced a documentary for the A&E Network and aired a report on WBBM-TV in Chicago. The documentary shocked the nation and resulted in the most significant changes to the Illinois penal system in Joliet’s history.
The journalist hosted several A&E crime and news documentaries, including American Justice, Investigative Reports and Cold Case Files. Bill formerly anchored The CBS Morning News. He is also the longtime anchor of WBBM-TV in Chicago, which is owned and operated by CBS. The journalist narrated Peter Byck’s 2010 documentary Carbon Nation. He also played the narrator in Will Ferrell’s 2004 film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, as well as the 2013 sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. On July 8, 2013, Bill was named the Voice of Illinois Tourism.
