Biography


Shahabuddin ChuppuMore‘s political activism began during his student days, as chairman of the Pabna Unit of the Chhatra League and the Pabna Jubo League in 1974. Tragically, he was imprisoned following the brutal assassination of Bangladesh’s founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman, in 1975. Despite this, Chuppu continued to play a crucial role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape, serving as the Ministry of Justice’s appointed coordinator in the case filed on the assassination of Bangabandhu. He was also chairman of the judicial inquiry commission set up after the 2001 general elections to investigate the murders, rapes and other inhumane acts committed by the leaders of the BNP-Jamaat alliance.

Career


ChupuThe civic and professional achievements of are numerous. He joined the Civil Service of Bangladesh as a Judicial Officer in 1982 and was elected General Secretary of the Judicial Service Association in 1995. He obtained his MSc from Rajshahi University in 1974 and later obtained his degree in law from the same institution in 1975. Chuppu began his career in the judicial service in 1983, serving as a district judge until 2006 and serving as President of the Labor Court in 2006, Advocate at the Supreme Court from 2008 to 2011 and Commissioner of the ACC from 2011 to 2016. Throughout his long career, Chuppu carried out various important assignments and worked as a journalist for the Daily BanglarBani from 1980 to 1982.

He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. and represents JMC Builders Ltd on the board. Presidency


The upcoming expiration of President Md Abdul Hamid’s mandate is much discussed in Bangladesh. Hamid, a top Awami League leader and seven-time lawmaker, was elected president in the last two elections and served as the country’s longest-serving president. However, the constitution does not allow for a third term and Hamid’s term will officially end on April 23.

Election process


Bangladesh’s 22nd presidential election is set to be a win as the ruling Awami League holds an overwhelming majority in parliament. The Awami League, which holds 302 of the 350 seats in the House, should easily secure victory for its candidate.

On February 12, Shahabuddin Chuppu, a prominent lawyer and member of the Awami League Advisory Council, was named the party’s presidential candidate. The nomination was officially submitted to the Bangladesh Electoral Commission in the presence of top Awami League leaders, including Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, and Presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman. Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, the chief parliamentary whip, was also present.

The nomination was endorsed by Awami League Chairman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following a meeting of the Awami League parliamentary party on February 7. After the candidacy was submitted, Sheikh Hasina greeted Shahabuddin with a bouquet of flowers, symbolizing his support for his candidacy.

He graduated from Rajshahi University, where he obtained his MSc and LLB degrees in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
